Cords, cords and more cords...

... I simply fell for them. I am trying to make various home accessories from them: poufs, baskets, even a small rug would work, placemats, bags, lots of lovely things. You can make anything you like from them. They are very durable and can take rougher handling. I have tried several kinds of cord and I must say I enjoy working with MILA cords the most.  MILA cords are thick cotton yarns in a huge range of colours, both solid and mottled. They come in different thicknesses: 3 mm, 5 mm, 7 mm and 9 mm. The cord is soft and flexible, and evenly thick along its whole length.

Mila cords with a 3 mm diameter are suitable for making baskets or bags. They have no inner polyester filling, and are soft and pliable. The yarn is very pleasant to work with, and the items made from it are nice to the touch, light and yet sturdy. The skeins are perfectly wound for easy handling while you work and are 100 m long. There is no need to rewind them: if you do not remove the label, just pull out the end of the cord and start crocheting. The label holds the skein nicely together and the cord does not tangle. Use a 5-8 mm hook. From 100 m of cord you can make a square of about 45x45 cm.

Mila cords with a 5 mm diameter are a proven classic for making poufs, rugs or sturdier baskets. They are soft and pleasant to the touch. They have an inner polyester fibre wrapped in 100% cotton; for this thickness use an 8-10 mm hook. From 100 m of cord you can make a square of about 40x40 cm.

Another one I tried is Loopy by  YarnMellow, a 100% polyester cord without an inner fibre, about 4 mm thick. The 150 m length is wound on a paper spool. I used a 5.5-6 mm hook. The yarn is firm, slightly shiny, does not stretch out and holds its shape well, so it needs no extra stiffening, and it is nice to work with. A small drawback is that the yarn unravels quickly when cut, so you need to expect this and quickly seal both cut ends. It is best if someone else holds the yarn with both hands, you neatly cut it between your fingers and then quickly singe it with a lighter. Just the yarn, not your fingers.

You can make a bag, a small basket, placemats or lots of other accessories from it. Thanks to the look of the yarn, every item will look luxurious. For this bag (see the photo in the gallery below) I used 1.5 spools. The bag has a leather bottom of 30x10 cm and is 28 cm high.

The items are easy to keep clean: you can put them in the washing machine on a gentle programme or wipe them with a sponge.

Loopy has a wide range of colour shades that combine beautifully. The colours are stable and do not fade.

I wish you pleasant work and great makes.
